The prostitute was one of the first of the gentler sex to arrive in Alaska during the economic boom of the Gold Rush. Her presence was welcome by the early-day Sourdough, and tolerated by a mercantile generation of later, easier days. This is the story of one working woman who saw it all during a lengthy career as an Alaskan madam. Based upon interviews with Dolly Arthur not long before her death, "Dolly’s House" Represents part of Alaska’s historical record.

A very rare treat I might have missed! I probably would not have picked up Dolly's House if I had not actually visited Dolly house. In fact, just reading about Dolly's House as a port of call "attraction", I wasn't that much interested in visiting it. However, as I was walking down Creek Street, the sky's opened up and it began to pour down rain. One of Dolly's (part of the tourist attraction) "Girls" beckoned me inside, and OMG ! I was still inside long after the rains had stopped. Turns out, Dolly's House, at Number 24 Creek Street, was one of the highlights of my Alaskan Cruise! In August I'll be going on another Alaskan cruise, and Dolly's House will be my first stop in Ketchikan!

Dolly House Ketchikan Last Legal Madam eBook June Allen Reviews
Interesting read but didnt hold attention..slow
We visited Dolly's House while in Ketchikan and were looking forward to hearing more of the story.
This is a straightforward unvarnished tale of Dolly, owner and proprietor of Dolly's House, now a museum at the end of Creek Street. I visited it, and it's an interesting place, indeed.
This book starts off really slowly and goes down hill from there. The author waitied way, way too long to interview this old madam and the rambling stories she tells are niether interesting nor an insightful peek into the history of Alaska at that time.
I recently was in Ketchikan, Alaska in May on a Alaskan cruise. I had heard of Dolly's House through my research. Prior to visiting Dolly's House I have read other books about the women who worked in prostitution in the Gold Rush era. This is a time frame that is interesting & fascinating. I felt that after I had visited her house that I must read the short book. This book does tell of Dolly Arthur's life, the history of the town Ketchikan, & the book tells of the legal issues the town went through as well. Again, a good book and I'm glad I got to visit her house.
After visiting Dolly's House I was eager to read about her; very interesting Alaska history.
Great story of an interesting woman, she lived a life and in a time the is unimaginable for most of us, but an interesting none the less
